As the leaves begin to change, a group of bright, motivated interns are heading back to their universities to finish their studies. This summer, our interns traded classrooms for coastlines as they joined us in Plymouth, getting involved in exciting projects and gaining real world experience.

Now, as they return to university life, they take with them not only new skills and insights but also stories, friendships, and a deeper appreciation for the ocean and the tech shaping its future. We’ll hear from our interns about what they worked on, what surprised them, and how their summer in Plymouth is influencing where they’re headed next.

We offer a variety of work placements from summer to year long internship’s please contact info@marineai.co.uk for more information.

Annabelle Goldsmith-

I worked at Marine AI for my industry year from July 2024-2025. This was one of the best offices I have ever worked in, everyone is friendly and helpful, which contributes to the positive/ can-do attitude. For a company, we have had a lot of socials, including BBQs for lunch on sunny days and a pub trip every pay day to celebrate all the work we did. This placement has helped me develop strong professional and social skills. From the regular interaction with my team, I practiced my ability to pick up new concepts quickly whilst putting them into practice. The most important skills over this placement was problem solving and clear communication. Without clear communication things can quickly turn confused, problems can arise and therefore loses money. This is a highly innovative and new tech company, with challenges and new tasks all the time. I highly recommend working here!

Victoire Evans-

My time at Marine AI has been very valuable. As a student, this summer internship has allowed me to gain experience in a professional environment, but also to increase my confidence in communication and other essential workplace skills. I have developed an understanding of how a workplace is structured and run.

I hadn’t done much coding before my internship, and it was excellent to be at MarineAI to be able to familiarise myself with Python and become more confident in my use of the tool.

The tasks that were assigned to me were very interesting. I worked on the Tactical Engine tool, and I was allowed to choose which particular task I did; it was very flexible. While I was doing my work independently, if I needed help or advice, everyone was happy to offer it and to share their knowledge. This was great for the tasks, but also for my own personal development.

I have been really pleased to learn more about the maritime industry, in general, with which I had little familiarity before this Summer.

Marine AI is a very pleasant environment to work in. Everyone is very nice, and socials are organised regularly, which allowed me to get to know different people in a more relaxed atmosphere, which I enjoyed very much.  I am really grateful to have had the opportunity to work at Marine AI, it is definitely worth it !

My time interning with MarineAI has been equal parts challenging and rewarding. Unlike typical internship programs, with MarineAI you start on development on day one, with all of the work tailored towards solving real-world problems. Over the last couple of months, I have greatly honed both my research and coding skills, and have learned how to turn academic ideas into well-written code, adhering to best development practices. The working environment is extremely collaborative, and I felt that people were always keen to discuss fresh and exciting ideas even if they were working on different parts of the marine autonomy space.

I was given a lot of freedom in my research task, and over the past few weeks have been researching on improving current methods in COLREGs-compliant path planning, using cutting edge algorithms and software packages in machine learning. Throughout the whole process, communication with my supervisors has been excellent, and it felt as though everyone was trying to get the best out of me and my ideas.

Interning for MarineAI was super stressful at times but in general I really had a positive experience and truly learnt a lot about software development that I could not have learnt sitting in my room in front of my PC. I felt like I could talk to any member of the company and I always felt like I was a part of the team since everyone made me feel welcome.

As I move on to the next chapter of my life its great to have that experience as not only a fond memory but a strong foundation for my career that I’m hoping I can build upon. I miss you all already!
