CETUS

CETUS Project with The Royal Navy

Project CETUS concerned the design and build of the Extra-Large Uncrewed Underwater Vessel (XLUUV) named XV Excalibur. This 12m-long, 2m-across experimental submarine is the largest and most complex uncrewed submersible operated by any European Navy.

Built by MSubs in Plymouth, XV Excalibur is designed to be used on trials to demonstrate the capability of autonomous vessels for long endurance operations. MarineAI is responsible for the autonomy software onboard the submarine, providing tactical routing, situational awareness and executive control of the vessels actuators and electrical systems. XV Excalibur is capable of three-dimensional obstacle avoidance, and continuous communication with support vessels during a mission enables fully informed autonomous decision making.

Exploiting the Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and covert nature of the XLUUV, as well as Excalibur’s ability to carry bespoke payloads (including an ROV deployed on an umbilical or an Atonomous Underwater Ground Vehicle (AUGV)) will allow the Royal Navy to reamain at the forefront of cutting-edge defence technology.
